Getting emergency medical with the Discovery Health app's emergency assist

In a medical emergency, you want to get help quickly and easily. That's exactly what the Emergency assist feature in the Discovery Health app does for you.

When you click on the Emergency assist button, you'll be connected to emergency services in seconds.

 

Get help quickly in a medical emergency

The Discovery Health app makes it quick and simple to get emergency care.

In an emergency, all you need to do is:

  • Open the Discovery Health app. You don't even need to log in.
  • Click the red Emergency assist button on the login screen to phone an emergency operator.

Emergency assist calls are answered by a dedicated Netcare 911 team who will send an ambulance to your location. Your medical records will automatically be shared with emergency services to save time and improve the care that you get.

You can also access Emergency assist when you are logged in to the Discovery Health app. When you click the red Emergency assist button at the top of the home page, you'll get three options:

  • Call an emergency operator (for emergencies)
  • Set up a callback (for emergencies)
  • Speak to a doctor now (for non-emergency medical care)

You can also access Emergency assist when you are logged in to the Discovery Health App. Just click on the red "Emergency assist" button at the top of the home page, you will be given three options - two for reaching emergency services, and one for reaching a doctor for non-emergency care (called 'Speak to a doctor now', which is for non-emergency medical care).

When you are logged in to the app, there is also an option to 'Request a call back'. If you click on this button, you will be asked to confirm your contact number and to confirm whether you agree to the terms and conditions of emergency assist. This step only takes a few seconds. Once you have given your confirmation, an emergency operator will phone you back within 90 seconds.

How does payment work for the "Emergency assist" service?

Emergency consultations and care are paid directly by Discovery Health Medical Scheme.

If the emergency operator considers the consultation to be for non-urgent or non-emergency care, the consultation will be paid from your available day-to-day benefits. If no funds are available or you don't have day-to-day benefits, you will pay for the service yourself.
